Envision by the numbers: Envision students are overwhelmingly part of traditionally underserved populations: 95% are students of color, 65% are from low income communities, and 75% are first generation college bound. The Envision Portfolio Defense system works: 99% of our graduates go to college, and 90% persist — return for a second year following their first — a leading indicator of successful college graduation.

ronthompson_bu_posse2A few weeks ago, we introduced our Envision friends and supporters to Ron Thompson with this postcard.  He is another of our college bound seniors, and this week, he, his family, and the Envision community are celebrating some great news:

Next fall, Ron will be attending Boston University with a four-year, full tuition Posse Foundation scholarship!  This competitive award recognizes Ron’s academic excellence, his strong leadership capacity, and his commitment to hard work.  For Ron, who will be a first generation college graduate, going to college is all about opening new doors for himself and making his parents proud.  Today, he has made all of us very proud to know and celebrate him.

Since 1989, the Posse Foundation has identified, recruited and trained 6,993 public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential to become Posse Scholars; college students in this leadership group graduate at a rate of 90 percent and make a visible difference on their campuses and throughout their professional careers.

Please join us in congratulating Ron for his selection and the Posse Foundation for choosing this bright young scholar!  And a big thank you to all of our friends and supporters: your generosity helps make stories like Ron’s possible.

Check out Personal Narrative, Revised: Writing Love and Agency in the High School Classroom, by Bronwyn LaMay.  Bronwyn is the 10th grade English teacher at our Hayward school, Impact Academy.  This inspirational book, from Teachers College Press, explores how teachers can transform classrooms and schools into places where students explore the intersection between literacy and their lives.

Congrats Bronwyn!  We can’t wait to read and share your work!

SpencerDefenseOn May 23, 2016, KQED’s education blog, MindShift, featured Envision Senior Spencer Gowin giving his College Success Portfolio Defense in a Facebook Live event!  The real time excitement of watching Spencer demonstrate why he’s ready for college this fall was tremendous.  Thank you to everyone who watched live, cheered Spencer on, and celebrated when his defense panel announced that he had passed with distinction!

If you missed it, don’t worry: it will be archived on the MindShift Facebook page and you can head over there and watch anytime by clicking the photo or the link above.

Spencer’s presentation is a great example of the Envision Portfolio Defense model in action.  In a defense, students must show that they have mastered academic content, learned core academic competencies (like inquiry and research), and acquired key leadership skills (like communication and collaboration).  In Spencer’s case, he did so with flying colors and now gets to get ready to walk across the stage at graduation and head to UC Berkeley in the fall!  Congratulations Spencer!

…and offering $5,000 signing bonuses to new math and science teachers!

We are seeking qualified candidates who are dedicated to a collaborative culture and who enjoy an environment of diversity, equity and inclusion.  Join us to help transform the lives of students – especially those who will be the first in their family to attend college – by preparing them for success in college, career, and life.

Design Studios in Hayward and Oakland are full, but you can still get in at our San Francisco school!  Click here to register now!

Come and spend the day with Envision students and staff at a Defense Design Studio, hosted by Envision Learning Partners; experience a real, high stakes student defense presentation for yourself!

Defense-Design-2016The College Success Portfolio Defense is the capstone activity for our students, four years of knowing, doing, and reflecting all pulled into one place and one moment. It is the final inquiry, the final essential question, the final exhibition: a culmination of four years of work. Akin to a dissertation defense or professional presentation, students stand before a panel of their peers, adult educators, and mentors to demonstrate the depth of their knowing, doing, and reflecting as evidenced by their academic work and self-reflection.

At this full day studio, facilitated by Envision Learning Partners, you’ll learn about what it means to participate in Performance Assessment at Envision schools.  You’ll observe an entire Portfolio Defense, by a 10th or a 12th grader.  And you’ll process and discuss what you saw, and connect it to your own educational context or teaching practice.
